The Slice 10568 Ceramic Scalpel (Replaceable Blade) combines the best features of our scalpels and our craft knives. With a slim, flat handle that is only 4.1 millimeters thick without its cap, it is able to reach into tight spaces and comes with a replaceable 10518 finger-friendly blade. The 10568 model uses the same blades as the Slice Craft Knife, which are non-magnetic, non-sparking, non-conductive, chemically inert, and rust-free. The autoclave-friendly blades can withstand temperatures of up to 1600 degrees Celsius, while the handle is designed to be lightly weighted for balance and stability.
Ceramic blades are preferred for their hardness and sharpness. Metal blades are rated at 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, while ceramic blades are rated at 8.2, second only to diamonds. The harder edges of ceramic blades maintain sharpness longer, cut better, and require less frequent replacement. A single ceramic blade from Slice can last up to 10 times longer than high-end metal blades. This means less risk of injury due to fewer blade changes.
The technology for advanced ceramics has been around for years, but Slice is the first company to fully utilize its advantages and create a new generation of safety knives. The proprietary blade manufacturing process developed by Slice ensures that the ceramic blades are effective, durable, and safe to the touch, offering benefits not found in other ceramic cutters.
In three words, our product can be described as Safe, Elegant, and Innovative. The idea for this product came from Slice's commitment to donate funds to Autism research through our main benefactor, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford University.
What sets our product apart is our unique patented blade that is safer to touch than metal, and requires pressure to initiate the cut via our handles. This makes blade handling and replacement with Slice ceramic blades much safer compared to traditional metal blades, while still allowing for a wide range of cutting applications.
The best part of our startup experience has been the constant innovation and engineering required to fine-tune the balance between handle and blade to achieve optimal safety and cutting capability. Seeing the reactions of people when they use Slice for the first time and realize the superiority of our ceramic blades is truly rewarding.
